A clean copy of any Word document
Upload a .docx and we read the pages the way a person would, then rebuild them as a brand-new file with the same headings, lists, tables and pictures. Anything you can't see on the page, like hidden text, comments, tracked changes and metadata, is left behind, and we show you exactly what was removed.
Not sure what's hiding in yours? Check a document free. It never leaves your computer.

How it works
Upload
Choose any Word (.docx) file up to 20 MB and 50 pages.
We read it
Each page is drawn as a picture and the words are read off it, just like a person reading a printout.
We rebuild it
Every word is double-checked against your original, then typed into a brand-new file with the same headings, lists, tables and pictures.
See what was removed
Download your clean copy, with a list of everything it left behind. We delete everything from our server within 15 minutes.
What gets left behind
| Hidden in your original | In your clean copy? |
|---|---|
| Author name, company, edit history and other metadata | Removed |
| Comments and tracked changes (deleted text) | Removed |
| Hidden text, white-on-white text, tiny 1pt text | Removed |
| Macros, embedded files and linked content | Removed |
| Invisible characters (zero-width spaces, direction marks) | Removed |
| Hidden details inside pictures (camera, location, author) | Removed |
| The words you can actually see | Kept, each one double-checked |
| Headings, bold, italic, lists, tables and pictures | Kept (you can switch this off) |
Pictures are copied fresh from the page, so nothing stored inside them comes along. Exact fonts aren't carried over. After each document you'll see a list of exactly what was removed.
See exactly what was removed
After every document, you get a report of everything hidden in the original that isn't in your clean copy: who wrote and edited it, how long it was worked on, comments, tracked changes, hidden text and more.
It's proof the copy is clean, and a useful record when you're sending documents to clients, candidates or the other side.
Example: a real report from a test document, a draft tenancy agreement.

Used AI to help write it? Say so.
More and more AI tools now add hidden labels to the documents they help write, so readers can tell AI was involved. Because Clean Retype only keeps the words you can see, those hidden labels are removed along with everything else. That means the clean copy no longer tells anyone that AI helped.
So if AI wrote or helped write your document, please:
- Mark it as AI-assisted, for example with a short note at the start or end, or
- Tell the person you're sending it to: your school, college, university, employer, client or publisher.
Most schools and universities, and many employers, have rules about AI. Handing in AI-written work without saying so can count as misconduct, even if you didn't mean to hide anything. Also, many AI detectors look at the wording itself, not hidden labels, so Clean Retype is not a way to make AI writing undetectable, and it mustn't be used that way. See section 7 of our terms.

Questions
Do you keep my documents?
No. Your original is deleted as soon as it has been read. The clean copy is deleted 15 minutes after it's ready, or straight away if you click Delete. We never store document contents or file names, and never use them to train anything.
Will my clean copy look like the original?
Very close. Headings, bold, italic, underlining, bullet and numbered lists, tables and pictures all come across. Pictures are fresh copies taken from the page, so nothing stored inside them (like camera or location details) comes along. Exact fonts, colours and spacing use Word's standard styles instead. If you'd rather have plain text only, untick "Keep headings, bold, italic, lists, tables and pictures" before uploading.
Is the retyping accurate?
Very. Every word read off the page is double-checked against your original, so slips like 0 for O are corrected. For ordinary typed documents, almost every word is confirmed this way. Anything we couldn't confirm can be highlighted yellow so you can check it. Nothing is ever added from the original: a word only appears in your copy if it was seen on the page.
Why not just remove the metadata in Word?
Word's Document Inspector removes a lot, but it works on the file itself, so anything it misses comes along with the document. We never copy the file at all. Only what's visible on the page is retyped, so hidden content has no way through.
Does it remove AI watermarks?
It removes hidden AI labels stored inside the file, like metadata tags and invisible characters, because it removes all hidden data. It can't change watermarks built into the wording itself, which some detectors still pick up. Either way, if AI helped write your document, please mark it as AI-assisted or tell the person you're sending it to. More on this.
