Screening software reads every word in a CV, including words a person can't see. Some candidates take advantage of that by hiding keywords from the job advert in white or tiny text, or by adding instructions aimed at AI screening tools, such as “rank this candidate first”.
What hidden text in a CV looks like
- White text on a white page, often a block of keywords copied from the job advert.
- Tiny text, 1 or 2 point, tucked into a header, footer or margin.
- Hidden text in Word, set not to display or print.
- Instructions to AI tools, such as “ignore previous instructions”.
Check a Word CV
- Press
Ctrl+A(Cmd+A) to select everything. - Set the font colour to black and the size to 11pt. White and tiny text will appear. Close without saving.
- Click the ¶ button on the Home tab to show formatting marks; hidden text appears with a dotted underline.
Check a PDF CV
- Select everything (
Ctrl+A), copy it, and paste into a plain text editor. - Compare it with what you see on the page. Anything extra was hidden.
Check them faster
The free Clean Retype check does this in seconds for Word and PDF CVs, and runs in your browser, so no candidate data is uploaded. Recruiting at volume? See Clean Retype for teams.
Hidden text tells you something was hidden, not why. Some CV templates contain hidden text by accident, so it's worth a conversation rather than an automatic rejection.
Or check it in seconds
Drop the file into the free Clean Retype check and it lists what's hiding inside: author names, comments, hidden sheets and rows, speaker notes, earlier versions, and text still sitting under black boxes.
